History of Service

Previously, I’ve served as a District Court Judge (2009-2011) and as a Maggie Valley Alderman (2011). In 2018, I was the Chair of the Public Relations/Publicity Committee of Haywood County Special Olympics. In 1999, while attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I served as a volunteer Russian interpreter for the Special Olympics World Games in Raleigh. Haywood County Lawyers for Literacy (2019-2020)
Lawyers for Literacy is a public service program that matches legal professionals with local school children to improve students’ reading skills and spark their interest in books, civics and history.
Lawyers for Literacy volunteers spend at least 30 minutes a week reading to a small groups of students over a month’s time. A volunteer records the books that the student will read during the month, either with the volunteer or alone, in a passport booklet supplied by the NC Bar Foundation and gifted to the student at the end of the program.

North Carolina Association of Women Attorney's
NCAWA was founded in 1978 by a vibrant group of women attorneys dedicated to speaking out on issues affecting women in North Carolina both within and outside the legal profession. Today, NCAWA’s volunteer board and lobbyist, in collaboration with local chapters and members across the state, continue the organization’s powerful mission of promoting the participation of women in the legal profession and advancing the rights and welfare of women under the law.

2023-24 Queen, Annual Mardi Gras Ball Gala Fundraiser for Haywood County Schools Foundation. This is the 501(c)3 non-profit arm of Haywood County Schools that raises private funds for student scholarships and teacher classroom needs, 100% of which goes directly to students and teachers. This year, six candidates raised a record-breaking $166,000. I was crowned Queen because I raised the most money of the Queen candidates, over $50,000, which is the most money raised by any candidate ever. With the proceeds of my individual contributions, I am fortunate enough to be able to endow the Vanhook Law Firm Annual Scholarship, which awards $1,000 annually to a deserving

Queen, Annual Mardi Gras Ball Gala continued: Tuscola or Pisgah High School student who has an "A" GPA, who is a leader in their school, church or community, who is active in sports or extracurricular activities, and/or who has overcome an adversity and who will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Traditionally the role of Queen has no duties or expectations beyond coronation but, in addition to establishing a scholarship fund which has never been done before by a candidate, I plan to use my celebrity to continue to raise money for the Foundation and to bring awareness to important issues such as the Slow Down Move Over For Flashing Lights Laws and Enforcement.
